Video Calling Made Easy: See Your Grandkids on FaceTime, Zoom, or WhatsApp

Video calling looks complicated from the outside, but it comes down to the same three steps every time: open the app, find the person, tap the video icon. Here’s exactly how to do that on the three most common apps families use.

FaceTime (iPhone or iPad)

Open the green FaceTime icon, tap the plus button, type your grandchild’s name or phone number, and tap the video camera icon. If they also have an iPhone, there’s no account setup required beyond what’s already on your device.

Zoom (Any Device)

Your family sends a link before the call — just tap it. No account or password needed. Tap “Join,” allow the camera and microphone when your device asks, and you’re connected.

WhatsApp (Any Smartphone)

A good option for family overseas. Open WhatsApp, find their name in your chats, and tap the video camera icon at the top right. It uses Wi-Fi, so it won’t affect your phone bill.

If Something Goes Wrong

Can’t be heard? Check that mute isn’t turned on. Picture frozen? Check your Wi-Fi connection. Not sure which app to use? Ask your family which one they already use, and just learn that one — you don’t need all three.

This week’s video shows each step on screen. Pick one app, schedule a practice call with a family member, and it’ll feel routine within a week.
